1851年生於馬利蘭州 Maryland, Berlin, 父親是黑奴, 母親持家; Charles 年少喪父, 為被免兒子成為黑奴, 母親把他交托家姐, 使他可跟隨姨母一起工作赚錢。Charles 自少已感到是個童工而已; 至十七歲, 他結婚成家, 婚後育有八個孩子。自從開始福音歌曲寫作之後, 又得兒子助他一臂, 分担他的歌曲作品發行和售賣工作, 一家得以維生。

"Stand By Me, Father" 完成後, 衹在一些教堂傳唱, 至1922年十二月由 Madame Magdalene Tartt Lawrence 作首次錄音, 但是要等至1924年初, 唱片由 Paramount Records 派拉蒙唱片公司印製面世, 衹放在B-面, 而A-面是 "His Eye Is On The Sparrow"。
