Thomas E. Gaddis (1908-1984), 一位專於囚犯傳記故事的小說家。1955年的作品, 講述一名他所認識的囚犯 Robert Stroud 的故事, 由 United Artist 聯藝影片公司拍製, 1962年七月三日面世, 一齣長達兩個多小時的人物傳記電影。 電影與真實故事有很大的差距之外, "Birdman 鳥人" 這别號是來自 Kansas 肯薩斯州 Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary 聯邦感化監獄, 並非 San Francisco Bay 三藩市海灣的 Alcatraz Island 監獄。
他在獄期間, 著作分别於1933年和1943年出版, 亦成為監獄圖書館的藏書之一, 亦曾有機會重閱自己的箸作。而電影在他離世前十八個月已面世, 雖然在 Alcatraz Island 監獄亦有囚犯的電影室, 不過, 這類電影是不准許播放的。有曾在監獄工作的退休人士稱, 這電影過份美化了 Robert Stroud, 更戲謔: "當年的 Robert Stroud 没有機會看到這電影, 否則他會從輪椅中彈起來!"
