丈夫 David Harris 因拒絕被徵召加入國家武裝部隊; 在1969年7月16日, 聯邦法院下拘捕令把他囚押監獄, 服刑15個月。當時的 Joan Baez 已明顯可見, 懷有六個月身孕, 又正於8月15日舉行的 "Woodstock '69" 演唱會快將開始, 她亦早已答應演出, 而之前發生了 David 在囚期間, 曾一度絕食抗議, 更使她憂傷。在這次 Woodstock '69 演唱會 Joan Baez 有感而唱出一曲 "WE SHALL OVERCOME" !
