NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL - "Barefoot Madonna"
1959 年首次舉辦的 Newport Folk Festival 演唱會, 参予的歌手有: Pete Seeger, Odetta, Bob Gibson, The New Lost City Ramblers, Earl Scruggs, Jean Ritchie, John Jacob Niles, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee 等歌手。


十八歲的 Joan Baez 被 Bob Gibson 邀請, 在沒有給介紹給觀眾下, 合唱 "Virgin Mary Had One Son" 和 "We Are Crossing The Jordan River" 兩曲, 這是她首次亮相, 擠身高手如雲的盛會; 就憑此机機會, 她開始踏上了 "Queen Of Folk Music" 之路。

"BAREFOOT MADONNA"
這次露面於演唱會之後, 因為她有獨特和清晰, 近乎完美的嗓子, 經常赤着脚和一頭黑長髮, 像當年名畫中的女神 "Barefoot Madonna", 因此被當年的樂壇業界給她暱稱為 "Madonna" (一些赤着脚的少女, 均冠以此名)。及後, Columbia 和 Vanguard 公司爭相跟她簽約為旗下歌手; Joan Baez 為了有較多的機會, 寧取較小規模的 Vanguard Records。
