美國西岸, 加州的日落斜陽, 照着寧靜的三藩市海灣, 閃爍如鑽的海面與金黃色的天空, 互相輝映, 靠近碼頭的浪聲, 海鷗在覓食, 漁夫正忙着收起漁網; 這是 Otis Redding 從來沒有親歴過的景像 ....

六月 - Otis Redding 参予在 San Francisco 三藩市 Fillmore 舉行 "Monterey Pop Festival" 音樂會之後, 和樂隊經理人 Speedo Sims 在 Richardson Bay 灣內的 Sausalito 租下一艘船屋, 藉此休息一會, 當然亦離不開歌曲寫作。面對加州初夏的陽光、三藩市海灣、幽靜的海邊, 靈感倍增, 一曲 "Dock Of The Bay" 就此而生; 樂曲方面得 Stax 唱片公司監製, 又是結他手的 Steve Cropper 之助, 以當前如潮浪的低音、加上一段輕快的口哨聲為主調, 很快把音樂曲譜完成, 但是 Otis 的歌詞衹完成第一段而已 ....
八月 - Otis Redding 協助女歌手 Carla Thomas 的專輯 "King & Queen" 錄音之後; 繼而又要前赴歐洲演唱, 期間有時在入住酒店的信箋紙張, 甚至在紙餐巾上, 草草完成餘下來的歌詞, 再經修飾之後 ....
十一月 - 返回 Tennessee 田納西州 Memphis 曼菲斯市 Stax 唱片公司進行此曲的唱片錄音工作; 計畫六個星期內完成印製和發行面世。
十二月十日 - 離唱片發行的日子還有一個月; Otis Redding 在一次小型飛機旅程墮機意外身亡, 終年二十六歲。"The Dock Of The Bay" 成了他的最後遺作; 一首被樂迷追捧的歌曲, 亦破了美國流行樂壇首次, 以追頒 "US Billboard Hot 100" 榜首的榮銜, 給予身故的歌手。此曲在越戰期間, 很受駐越軍人喜愛, 儘管歌詞跟當時槍林彈雨的實况完全相反, 但唱出他們思鄉的情懷, 亦衹因身在戰場, 卻不知每一天的命運, 能否像潮水般進退, 如船隻能航泊四海, 或最終要棲息異地(陣亡)呢?
一位冉冉升起的新星, 正要成功步向樂壇主流的路上, 他的去世使樂壇失去一片光芒, 衹留下餘音猶在的一曲, 憂鬱的唱腔, 帶給樂壇一份懷念 !

四月四日 - Otis Redding 去世後五個月, 民權領袖 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 馬丁.路德.金博士被槍殺身亡; "The Dock Of The Bay" 這首脫俗和諧的歌曲, 喚起了當時憤怒的民眾, 要把緊張的種族問題, 冷靜地緩和下來。今天, 正處社會顛簸不安之時, 一首令人心平和的歌曲, 像當年的一曲 "We Shall Overcome" 同是互勉和慰藉的作品。
