一首近兩百年的作品, 亦是不少國家應用於學校音樂教材的歌曲之一。樂譜是一位英國主教爵士 Sir Henry Rowley (1786-1855) 的作品, 以意大利西西里民歌的風格寫成; 歌詞由一位二十歲已開始踏足舞臺的歌劇演員, 又是劇作家的 John Howard Payne (1791-1852) 所撰寫, 此曲於1823年, 首次在一齣歌劇 "Clari" 或以英文劇目名為 "Maid of Milan" 面世; 今天, 這歌劇已經被遺忘或失傳了。原作歌詞版本共五段 ....

自從給 John Howard Payne 在歌劇演出後, 此樂曲大受民眾歡迎; 有出版商誤以為這類坊間民歌曲目, 可把它大量印製銷售, 在業界相互競爭之下, 引起 Sir Henry Rowley Bishop 關注, 對此曲版税收益的問題而訴諸法庭, 最後由法院判定此樂曲的版權全歸他所有。
1827年, 瑞典作曲家 Franz Berwald 把此曲由他的低音管樂隊 Konzertstück for Bassoon and Orchestra 演譯; 1830年, Gaetano Donizetti 亦把此曲作為歌劇 "Anna Bolena" 的主題音樂; 及後再有不同型式和場合的演譯, 同被樂壇歡迎。1857年, 由作曲鋼琴家 Sigismond Talberg 把此曲樂撰寫成鋼琴樂譜, 成了作品72號樂曲 "Home! Sweet Home!" 流傳至今, 而歌曲多以首一至兩段從簡來演譯。之後, 此曲樂在不同影視的溫馨場面出現。不少曾演出和錄製這首歌曲的人或媒體皆賺了錢, 而作詞的 Payne 却沒有拿到他應得的回報。
Payne 曾經在一封信件中有述："當時我還沒有一個自己的家; 但是, 此曲的魅力使世上很多人, 以享有天倫之樂而感自豪!"
