直至 Ben E. King 完成了 "Save The Last Dance For Me" 之後; 1960年, 他已離開樂隊 "The Drifters", 同年他又聽到 Sam Cooke 撰寫另一版本的 "Stand By Me, Father", 這更難令他放棄演繹此曲的意欲。及後, 聽過作曲家 Jerry Leiber 和 Mike Stoller 推介的作品, 和試唱幾首他們新編的歌曲後, 他再把已經寫好部份歌詞的 "Stand By Me" 拿出來, 並邀請 Jerry 和 Mike 兩人把歌曲代為完成, 最後以流行歌曲唱法, 取代教堂傳統福音格調。1961年, "Stand By Me" 一曲以新嶄風格面世, 最突出的就是開始時的幾小節, 和及後的低音結他彈奏, 這是 Mike Stoller 篇曲的創意, 成了今天的經典 ....

2015年三月, "Stand By Me" 在樂壇面世達五十多年之後, 被美國 "國會圖書館 Library of Congress" 存檔在 "國家錄製作品登記 National Recording Registry" 當中, 並確訂為 "歴史, 文化或美學 Culturally, Historically, or Aesthetically Significant" 系列。可惜, 同年四月三十日, Ben E. King 與世長辭, 享年七十七歲。
