二十世紀五十年代末至六十年代初, 在南美洲南部有些地區的農村, 由於生活貧困, 日漸惡化而促使土著原居民湧向城市, 他們把獨特的傳統音樂帶去當地, 與學生和中產階級的歐洲文化相融合, 超越階級的界限, 以嶄新風格的歌曲, 成為人們表達受壓迫的一鼓動力。
這類歌曲迅速在整個地區傳播開去, 從傳統和普及, 演變得更加政治化, 在社會運動當中扮演了重要的角色。二十世紀六十和七十年代, 南美洲國家的極權軍政府, 令人民要面對政治壓迫有惡化的趨勢, 新一代的歌手和撰詞人, 在充滿暴力壓迫感的日子, 以 "Nueva Canción 新歌曲" 的型式, 表達群眾面對生活貧困, 帝國主義, 專權, 民主, 人權和宗教自由等問題。智利知名作家女歌手 Violeta Parra 以演唱這類反映社會狀況, 與及對自由表達渴望的民歌, 成為 "Nueva Canción 新歌曲" 的重要推動者; 她兩個女兒 Isabel 和 Angel 與阿根廷裔美國藝術家 Suni Paz 等, 在 Violeta Parra 推動的音樂基礎下, 繼續承傳和發展以政治為主題的歌曲。
智利的 "Nueva Canción 新歌曲", 多數以富感染力和充滿詩意的歌詞, 呼籲抗爭, 積極參予促進社會改革, 加上傳統文化與地方民謠的元素, 經一些文人或歌手重新詮釋, 從而肯定了被邊緣化的土著傳統文化。在早期的 "Nueva Cancióneros 新歌曲集" 的作品, 經常使用民間的傳統樂器, 如安第斯 "Quena 長笛", "Aampoñas 排笛" 和 "Charango 十弦琴" 以強調原住民的文化根源的尊嚴與自豪感。
最為智利和南美地區認識的 "Nueva Canción 新民歌" 是六十年代初, Sergio Ortega 作曲, Claudio Iturra 撰詞的作品 ....
"Venceremos"《我 們 必 勝》
智利總統大選, Salvador Allende 經歴了两次失敗之後, 1964年的第三次参選, 結果由 Eduardo Frei Montalva 獲勝。Allende 這次的競選歌曲是 Claudio Iturra 與 Sergio Ortega 的作品 "Venceremos"《我們必勝》, 由智利傳統合唱樂隊 "Quilapayún" 演繹和錄音, 在競選期間播出, 由於質素較差, 加上 Salvador llende 競選落敗, 歌曲沒有保存而漸漸被人遺忘。
六年後, 1970年的總統選舉, "Juventudes Comunistas de Chile 智利共青團" 為推動和鼓勵人們参予選舉投票, 由民謠樂隊 "Inti-Illimani" 錄製一張名為 "Canto al Programa 節目之歌" 的專輯, 十二首歌曲以創新風格加上 "Relato 旁白, 最後的壓軸歌曲是 "Venceremos"《我們必勝》。
