"Mbube"
1934年, 在南非約翰內斯堡 Johannesburg, 一首令當地黑人鼓舞的歌曲作品, 由 Solomon Linda 組成的 "Evening Birds" 合唱團, 以一呼與一應的唱法, 在不同場合演譯之後, 給予當地黑人, 因種族隔離所承受的內心抑壓, 得以一些舒解。
"Mbube" 此曲經流傳出去幾年後, 給一位音樂業界的星探聽到, 很快便把他們帶到設於南非唯一的錄音室, 由意大利人 Eric Gallo 開設的唱片公司 Gallotone Record Company, 將此曲和 "Evening Birds" 樂隊的其他歌曲, 同錄製成 78rpm 唱片, 1939年首次面世, 開始踏足樂壇。
有記載 Gallotone 這張唱片"Mbube" 的樂迷, 衹是在當年南非的羅德西亞 Rhodesia 本土和英國當地的南非黑人移民, 至1948年, 其銷量達十萬張。至於其他國家, 由於是南非 Zulu 祖鲁族語言, 樂迷祗對曲調感興趣, 而歌詞內容是難於發音和理解, 其唱片銷量卻沒有記錄。

遊吟詩人歌手 Pete Seeger 在四十年代的民歌創作早已盛名, 他的朋友 Alan Lomax, 一位民歌考究、收藏家及學者, 在清理藏品時, 欲將一些唱片棄掉, 心想, "Mbube" 這歌曲送給 Pete 是最好不過。Pete Seeger 聽過這首南非讚歌, 令他着迷之餘, 更親赴南非作音樂文化搜獵。
Pete 走進當年仍稱羅德西亞 Rhodesia 一鄉郊, 看着黑人土著一面抽煙, 一面咏唱 "Mbube" 這歌曲。為了一試找出歌曲的故事, 他不惜走近人群作探究和交流, 冒着臉上被噴的香煙, 把原來發音的 "EEM-boo-beh" 誤聽成 "Wimoweh"。回國之後, 煙霧與歌聲調子仍在他的腦海徘徊, 憑着記憶和忠於原作品, 把曲調和發音編成一曲 "Wimoweh", 成了自己樂隊 "The Weavers" 1952年面世的標誌樂曲, 而英文歌詞在當年仍沒有撰上。

五十年代美國的 McCarthy 麥卡錫時期, Pete Seeger 的政治立場和参予抗爭運動, 令他成為 "眾議院非美國人事務委員會 House Un-American Affairs Committee" 追擊的目標人物。 1952年二月 "Wimoweh" 面世初登上榜不久, 被樂壇業界音樂人委員會譴責, 排斥 "The Weavers" 所有歌曲, 被廣播電台禁播, 電視表演均被取消, "Wimoweh" 從榜上消失。
至1955年, 才能夠重返民歌舞台, 把這一曲來自南非 Zulu 祖鲁族的音樂曲調, 歴史性走進紐約市 New York City, 在一個被認為最高榮譽的 "卡內基音樂廳 Carnegie Hall" 演出。
作詞家 George Weiss 保留原曲的呼應清唱和聲法, 撰上與原作品意思相近的歌詞, 和英文名字 "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", 交由樂隊組合 "The Tokens" 演譯; 1961年, 唱片面世後, 即登上美國 "US Billboard Hot 100" 榜首, 與及英國 "UK Single Chart" 榜上第十一位。
