"Strange Fruit" - Billie Holiday (1915-1959)
美國流行樂壇1937年的經典 "抗議歌曲", 來自教師亦是詩人 Abel Meeropol, 化名 Lewis Allan 的作品。Abel Meeropol 1903年生於 New York 紐約市 Bronx, 父母是 Ukrainian 烏克蘭的猶太裔移民。

"Strange Fruit" 
歌詞是改編自 Abel Meeropol 的同名詩作, 為表達非裔美國人在種族歧視下的悲哀而作出抗議。Abel 這首詩的誕生是啟發自一張1930年的相片, Thomas Shipp 與 Abram Smith 两名黑人在 Indiana 印地安納州的 Marion 同被處私刑。

1937年一月, Abel Meeropol 在 "The New York Teacher 紐約教師組職" 的官方刊物發表這首詩之後, 儘管 Abel 曾邀請其他音樂家, 包括知名創作歌手 Eral Robinson 為他的詩作 "Strange Fuit" 譜上音樂, 最終亦被推卻, 唯有自己將音樂完成, 歌曲由妻子亦是教師與歌手的 Annie Shaffer 在其社交私人場合演繹之後, Annie Shaffer 與黑人女歌手 Laura Duncan 在紐約市 "Madison Square Garden 麥迪遜廣場公園", 以抗議歌曲的形式作首次公開演唱。

繼而, Billie Holiday 在紐約 Mahattan 曼哈頓 Greenwich Village 的 "Café Society 咖啡館協會" 演唱這一曲, 令在座的觀眾驚愕, 直至平靜下來才識得報以掌聲。據報導, Billie Holiday 對繼續演唱這首歌而感到有些不安, 咖啡館協會創辦人 Barney Josephson 理解人們的反應, 並堅持 Billie 在每晚的節目結束時唱出這一曲。Billie 所屬的 Columbia Record 哥倫比亞唱片公司, 拒絕錄製這歌曲, 而小規模的 Commodore Records 唱片公司卻敢於錄製和發行這歌曲的唱片; 1939年面世, 由於內容涉及對種族主義以直率且毫不妥協的譴責, 因此遭到當局嚴格審查而一度被電台禁播。"Strange Fruit" 更被 "Times Magazine 時代雜誌" 稱為 "本世紀最重要的歌曲" 之一。

歌曲主要是控訴和針對非裔美國人被凌遲處決, 將受害人與樹上的果實作比喻; 在二十世紀初, 這種私刑處決在美國南部地區達至高峯, 而大多數受害者都是非裔美國人。根據 Atlantic Records 創辦人 Ahmet Ertegun 的評語: ｢這歌曲被看作是一篇 "開戰宣言" 亦標誌着 "民權運動的開始"｣。
