Charles A. Zimmermann (1861-1916)
父親是一名海軍學院的樂隊成員, 內戰期間, 父母遷移到 Rhode Island 羅德島州 Newport 新港市後誕下 Charles。他自幼得父親的音樂熏陶, 畢業於 Baltimore 巴爾的摩 Peabody Conservatory of Music。海軍學院畢業, 至軍銜中尉; 1887年二十六歲開始, 任海軍學院樂隊指揮, 亦任上 Maryland 馬利蘭州首府 Annapolis 安納波利斯, St. Mary Church 聖瑪利教堂的管風琴師。
美國海軍學院的傳統, 每年的應届畢業軍官學員, 均由學院樂隊指揮總監譜赠一章樂曲作留念。1906年, 翌年才畢業的一級軍官學生 Alfred Hart Miles 代表各同學, 懇請 Zimmermann 提早撰寫一章樂譜, 先用作學院足球賽事的戰歌, 亦作翌年畢業的紀念歌曲。兩人走進學院的教堂, 同坐在一座管風琴前, Zimmermann 很快便完成一篇樂譜, 而在傍的 Miles 亦手執紙筆, 隨著琴聲調子撰上歌詞, 完成後, 把歌曲命名為"Anchors Aweigh", 這是取自船艦準備起航, 把海床下的鐵錨, 絞升至收回船上的口號。

1906年十二月一日, 在賓夕法尼亞州 Pennsylvania, 費城 Philadelphia 富蘭克林球場 Franklin Field 舉行的足球賽事, 由陸軍與海軍兩軍校對壘; 當時, 超過三萬觀眾面前, "Anchors Aweigh" 在球賽開始和進行其間不停播出, 樂曲震懾了客隊的士氣。
賽果, 海軍學院以10 比 0 獲勝, 這是他們自1900年以來, 相隔七年, 再重奪獎盃。

同年, 撰詞家 George D. Lottman 認為歌詞內容過於輕挑、揶揄和戲謔, 作球賽和文娛活動的歌曲之外, 不宜代表整體海軍; 最後, 把歌詞和曲譜刪改, 以兩節歌詞成為海軍學院的官方歌曲。
