Derry 德里, 之前所稱的 Londonderry 倫敦德里, County Londonderry 倫敦德里郡的最大城市, 亦是整個愛爾蘭的第五大城市。1921年, 愛爾蘭政府把東北面的六個郡 Londonderry, Down, Fermanagh, Antrim, Armagh 與 Tyrone 脫離愛爾蘭, 成為 North Ireland 北愛爾蘭自治政體。
大多數來自坊間的民謠歌曲, 由於日子久遠, 真正的作者是難於查證。1851年, 樂曲作品收藏家 Jane Ross 在 Ireland 愛爾蘭 County Londonderry 倫敦德里郡, Limavady 市集的街道上, 聽到一位街頭音樂賣藝人, 在演奏這首不知名的樂曲, 隨之將它的曲調用筆記錄下來; 1855年出版一本名為 "Ancient Music of Ireland" 的合輯; 這樂曲在當時還沒有名稱或系列標題, 儘管人們普遍認為它起源於 Ireland 愛爾蘭的 Londonderry, 隨後被命名為 "Londonderry Air" 而已。
"Danny Boy"
1910年, 英格蘭一位律師兼作詞家 Frederick Wealtherly 將 "Derry Air" 的樂譜撰上歌詞; 至1912年, 他有一位住在美國, Ireland 愛爾蘭裔的嫂嫂 Margaret 寄來一篇原是筆記錄下來, 經大幅編改後的 "Londonderry Air" 樂譜印本, 他把早己完成的歌詞重新編撰, 來配合這首寄自美國的新樂譜, 成為現今 "Danny Boy" 的版本。
Ernestine Schumann-Heink (1861-1936)
1915年的 78rpm 録音, 歌者是德國 Bohemia 波希米亞血統, 在美國的 Austria 奧地利裔舞台劇女歌唱家 Ernestine Schumann-Heink, 她這首仍有保存最舊的唱片是1917年的錄音, 至今有不同歌者的演繹, 亦有不少電影及電視片集用作挿曲或配樂, 之外還有視頻遊戱、宗教、葬禮儀式, 聖詩頌唱, 愛情和政治, 以不同曲目名字、歌詞内容和旋律格調的演繹。
歌詞内容的描述, 兒子步上戰場, 父母哀訴不知能否有重敍的一天; 歌詞以 Danny Boy 稱謂, 如果對女兒話别, 則以 Eily Dear, 後來的演繹多用回 "Danny Boy" 的原歌詞。至今, 此曲普及甚廣, 尤其是對大多數旅居海外的 "Sinn Feiners & Ulsterman 新芬黨阿爾斯特人" 均以之為 "National Anthem 國歌"; 而最樂見被視為 "國歌" 的歌詞, 全没有當年的愛爾蘭共和軍, 為獨立而流血和殺戮的詞彙, 並非現實中在該地所見所聞的一樣。在每四年的 "Commonwealth Games 英聯邦運動會"上, 這曲調旋律仍然是 North Ireland 北愛爾蘭的運動員和擁躉們的勝利頌歌。
